Company D was recruited by Captain William Chambers Beck in Armstrong County in the Summer of 1861. Originally known as the Finlay Cadets (possibly named for a benefactor in Kittanning) Beck drilled the regiment at the county fairgrounds near Kittanning. The company then traveled to Pittsburgh, where it was mustered into service with the rest of the regiment.
The 62nd PA was originally commanded by Colonel Samuel Black, a veteran of the Mexican War, Governor of the Nebraska territory, and prominent lawyer from Pittsburgh.
Today, Company D is commanded by Gordon Sheaffer, portraying 2nd Lt. T. Jefferson Truitt. The current president of the group is Robert "Slim" Bowser.
